Early Life and Career
</h4>
<p>
Born on September 18, 1844 in Barnet, Vermont, Ide graduated from Dartmouth College in 1866. He practiced law in St. Johnsbury, Vermont until 1891. A Republican, from 1876 to 1878, Ide was State's Attorney for Caledonia County. From 1882 to 1885 he was a member of the Vermont State Senate.

Journey to the Philippines
</h4>

Ide was one of the Commissioners of the Taft Commission appointed in 1900. Like the other Commissioners, he arrived in the Philippines in June of that year, and assumed official legislative power on September 1, 1900.

Contributions in the Philippines
</h4>
<p>
Ide had six years of most valuable service during the constructive period of the government established in the Philippine Islands by the United States. He served as the Secretary of Finance and Justice from September 1, 1901, to June 30, 1904. He became the acting governor-general in November 1905 after <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1449/february-1-1904-luke-e-wright-was-inaugurated-as-civil-governor-of-the-philippines" class="news_link">Luke E. Wright</a>'s departure and then succeeded him in April 1906. He resigned in September of the same year and went back to Washington, D.C.
