Prelude to the Battle

The battle took place on Mount Puray, located in Montalban, which is now known as Barangay Puray, Rodriguez, Rizal. The Filipino revolutionaries, led by Revolutionary President <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1028/today-in-philippine-history-march-22-1869-emilio-aguinaldo-was-born-in-kawit-cavite" class="news_link">Emilio Aguinaldo</a> and General <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3234/today-in-filipino-history-august-27-1855-licerio-ger-nimo-was-born-in-sampaloc-manila" class="news_link">Licerio Geronimo</a>, faced off against Spanish forces sent under orders by Governor-General Fernando Primo de Rivera.

The Filipino revolutionaries had evacuated Cavite after most of its territory fell to the Spanish. The retreat began from a remote village in Dasmariñas and passed through Laguna until they reached the hills of Mount Puray. There, they were met by a Morong-based army led by Licerio Geronimo and set up a temporary camp until word reached them that a large Spanish column led by Colonel Felipe Dujiols was on its way to meet them.
