Early Life and Education
</h4>
<p>
She was the daughter of Salvador T. Lopez, a government auditor, and Teresa Cutaran. 
</p>
<p>
She pursued her education at Silliman University, where she undertook a Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in English and graduated magna cum laude in 1947.
</p>
<p>
Tiempo took her Masters Degree at the University of Iowa where she was a recipient of an international fellowship that lasted from 1947 to 1950. In 1958, Tiempo received a scholarship grant from the United Board of Christian Higher Education in Asia and she used it to get a doctorate degree in the English language at the University of Denver in Colorado.

Literary Works
</h4>
<p>
Tiempo's poems are intricate verbal transfigurations of significant experiences as revealed, in two of her much anthologized pieces, "Halaman" and "Bonsai". Her language has been marked as "descriptive but unburdened by scrupulous detailing". As a fictionist, Tiempo is as morally profound.

<p>
Her published works include novels such as "A Blade of Fern" (1978), "His Native Coast" (1979), and, "The Alien Corn" (1992). 
<p>
She also published poetry collections, "The Tracks of Babylon and Other Poems" (1966), and "The Charmer's Box and Other Poems" (1993). 
</p>
<p>
Her short story collection "Abide, Joshua, and Other Stories" was published in 1964.
