Early Life and Education

Born in Denver, Colorado, U.S., Gloria's early years were spent in the company of her Filipino father, Pedro Galla who went to the United States for his education, and her American mother, Mary Borrego.
</p>

In 1937, the family journeyed to the Philippines to spend time with their grandparents in Mabini, Pangasinan. Their initial plans to return to Denver were continually delayed, turning their intended short stay into an extended vacation. However, the outbreak of World War II left the Gallas stranded in the Philippines. During this tumultuous period, they learned farming skills. In 1943, a group of Japanese soldiers targeted Romero's mother leading to her tragic death just days before the war concluded. Following this heartbreaking event, her father made the decision for the family to permanently reside in the Philippines.

Her elementary education was completed at Mabini Elementary School, and she graduated from Riverview High School in Mabini, Pangasinan. Romero discovered her passion for acting at a young age. At the age of 11, she started aspiring to become an actress.

After graduating from Riverview High School, her family moved to Manila. With her father's consent, she tried her luck in show business. Her determination to pursue a career in the entertainment industry never wavered, even amidst challenges.

Early Career, Breakthrough, and Superstardom
</h4>

Gloria's journey in the film industry began at the age of 16, where she started as a background actor in the 1949 film "Ang Bahay sa Lumang Gulod", as well as in two other films under Premiere Productions, "Prinsipe Don Juan" (1951) and "Bahay na Tisa" (1951).  Her breakthrough came when she landed a supporting role in "Madame X" in 1952. The same year, she rose to stardom with leading roles in "Monghita" and "Palasig". Her portrayal of a wacky tobacco-smoking maiden in "Dalagang Ilocana" in 1954 won her the FAMAS Award for Best Actress.
