Early Life and Career

<p>
Natividad Almeda-López was born on September 8, 1892, in Manila. Her father, Manuel Gomez Almeda, was from Biñan, Laguna. He was a pharmacist who became a colonel in the Philippine Revolution against Spain. Her mother, Severina Martinez Lerma, was from Santa Rosa, Laguna. Severina was the eldest daughter of Jose Lerma, a talented Chinese contractor who made his fortune building many churches, schools, and other structures for the Catholic Church. The Gomez family were cousins of the Mercados, the family of national hero, <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1190/today-in-philippine-history-june-19-1861-dr-jose-p-rizal-was-born-in-calamba-laguna" class="news_link">Jose Rizal</a>.

She completed her Licentiate in Jurisprudence from the Escuela de Derecho de Manila in 1913, and passed the bar the same year. But being underaged, she had to wait another year to officially join the Roll of Attorneys on September 7, 1914.

At age 26, she delivered a speech at the Philippine Legislative Assembly arguing for women's rights.

In 1919, she was hired by the Bureau of Justice and was promoted to assistant attorney at the Attorney General's Office. In 1934, President <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1265/today-in-philippine-history-august-19-1878-manuel-quezon-was-born-in-baler-aurora" class="news_link">Manuel Quezon</a> gave her a permanent appointment as city judge of the City of Court of Manila, a post she had served in as a temporary capacity for three years.
