Early Life and Education
</h4>
<p>
Burnham was born on September 4, 1846, in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henderson,_New_York" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Henderson, New York</a>. He was the sixth of seven children in a family that adhered to the Swedenborgian faith, a Christian denomination founded by Emanuel Swedenborg. In 1855, Burnham's family moved to Chicago, where he attended Snow's Swedenborgian Academy and later Central High School. He attempted to gain admission to both Harvard and Yale but failed the entrance exams (years later both universities would award him honorary degrees).

After his unsuccessful attempts at college, Burnham decided to pursue a career in architecture. He became an apprentice draftsman at the architectural firm of William Le Baron Jenney, who is often referred to as the "Father of Skyscrapers". This experience provided Burnham with a solid foundation in architectural design and urban planning.

Arrival in the Philippines
</h4>
<p>
In 1904, the United States government commissioned Burnham to modernize the capital city of <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1508/today-in-philippine-history-august-7-1901-manila-became-a-chartered-city" class="news_link">Manila</a> and develop a second city, <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/560/today-in-philippine-history-september-1-1909-baguio-was-declared-a-chartered-city" class="news_link">Baguio</a>, as the summer capital. Burnham, accompanied by his colleague Pierce Anderson, arrived in Manila on December 7, 1904. They spent approximately six weeks in the Philippines, conducting site visits and initiating plans for the cities.
