Quezon had been suffering from tuberculosis, a disease that plagued him for many years. As World War II raged on, Quezon and his government were in exile in the United States, having fled the Japanese invasion of the Philippines. Despite his deteriorating health, Quezon continued to lead the government-in-exile with determination and resilience.

On August 1, 1944, Manuel L. Quezon succumbed to tuberculosis at Saranac Lake, New York. He was 65 years old at the time of his death.
