Manuel Luis Quezon was born on <time datetime="1878-08-19">August 19, 1878</time>, in the remote coastal village of Baler. At the time of his birth, Baler was the capital of the district of El Príncipe, then under the jurisdiction of Nueva Ecija, later incorporated into the province of Tayabas (now the province of Quezon). The geography of Baler - isolated by the formidable Sierra Madre mountain range to the west and the vast Pacific Ocean to the east - played a decisive role in shaping the resilient character of its inhabitants. During the nineteenth century, Manila was a full week's journey away, accessible only through wild, jungle-covered mountains or perilous sea routes.

Quezon's parentage provided him with a unique position within the rigid socioeconomic stratification of the Spanish Philippines. His father, <a href="https://ancestors.familysearch.org/en/L56C-85K/don-lucio-quezon-urbina-1850-1898" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Lucio Quezon Urbina</a>, was a retired sergeant of the Guardia Civil and a primary school teacher, while his mother, <b>María Dolores Molina</b>, was also a teacher. Historians note that Lucio was a Chinese mestizo from the Parián in Paco, Manila, while María Dolores was a Spanish mestiza. This heritage classified the family as blancos (whites) or mestizos, affording them a higher social status and greater freedom of movement than the indigenous population. Despite this status, the family's economic reality was modest; his parents earned an ample but limited salary of roughly $6 a month each, living in a typical thatched nipa hut on stilts.
