Role in the Philippine-American War

Smith's most infamous role came during the Philippine-American War, particularly in response to the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/2788/the-balangiga-conflict-its-causes-impact-and-meaning" class="internal-link">Balangiga massacre</a>. On <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1286/today-in-philippine-history-september-28-1901-the-people-of-balangiga-samar-attacked-and-killed-american-soldiers-and-officers" class="internal-link">September 28, 1901</a>, Filipino guerrillas attacked U.S. troops in the town of Balangiga on the island of Samar, resulting in the deaths of 51 American soldiers. In retaliation, General Smith was ordered to "pacify" the island. His methods, however, were brutal and indiscriminate.

Smith issued orders that led to widespread violence and destruction. He famously instructed his troops to kill anyone over the age of ten and to turn the island into a "howling wilderness". This resulted in the deaths of thousands of Filipino civilians, with estimates ranging from 2,000 to 50,000. His actions earned him the nicknames "Howling Jake" and "The Monster".
