Early Life and Education

Carmen de Luna was born on July 16, 1873 to Ignacia Villajuan and Sebastian de Luna in San Miguel, Manila. She attended a Catholic boarding school operated by Anacleta Abrera in Binondo, where she earned her elementary teaching certificate in 1890. To further her education, she enrolled in the Assumption Convent, where she met <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/2739/today-in-philippine-history-january-17-1873-librada-avelino-a-filipina-educator-who-co-founded-the-centro-escolar-university-was-born-in-quiapo-manila" class="news_link">Librada Avelino</a>, who would become her lifelong collaborator. De Luna graduated in 1894 and passed the government examination to obtain her teaching license as a secondary school teacher.

Career and Contributions
</h4>
<p>
In 1896, de Luna and Avelino opened a school in Santa Cruz, Manila. However, the school was forced to close at the end of the Philippine Revolution due to new educational policies imposed by the United States authorities. To adapt to these changes, de Luna and Avelino traveled to Hong Kong to improve their English skills. Upon their return, de Luna continued her education and earned a bachelor's degree in Arts and Sciences in 1907.

That same year, de Luna, Avelino, and Fernando Salas founded the Centro Escolar de Señoritas, a non-sectarian educational facility for girls. De Luna served as the assistant director from 1907 to 1934 and assumed the directorship upon Avelino's death. She led the university until her own death in 1962.
