Early Life and Education
</h4>
<p>
Fernando was born on May 30, 1873 into a highly educated family in Manila. His father, <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1714/today-in-philippine-history-november-4-1835-lorenzo-guerrero-was-born-in-ermita" class="news_link">Lorenzo Guerrero</a>, was a renowned painter and art teacher who mentored famous artists like <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1698/the-life-and-art-of-juan-luna-according-to-dr-jose-rizal" class="news_link">Juan Luna</a> and <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/945/today-in-philippine-history-february-21-1853-felix-resurreccion-hidalgo-was-born-in-binondo-manila" class="news_link">Felix Hidalgo</a>. His mother was Clamencia Ramirez. From a young age, Fernando showed a talent for languages and literature. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/2987/history-of-ateneo-de-manila-university" class="news_link">Ateneo</a> Municipal de Manila and his Bachelor of Laws degree from the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/2891/miguel-de-benavides-credited-as-founder-of-university-of-santo-tomas" class="news_link">University of Santo Tomas</a>.

Literary and Journalistic Career
</h4>
<p>
Fernando began his literary career early, writing poetry and contributing to various journals. During the Philippine Revolution, he was recruited by General Antonio Luna to serve as a contributor and editor for the newspaper <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1269/today-in-philippine-history-september-3-1898-la-independencia-came-out-with-its-first-issue" class="news_link">La Independencia</a>, alongside notable figures like <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3007/today-in-philippine-history-october-24-1874-rafael-palma-was-born-in-tondo-manila" class="news_link">Rafael Palma</a> and <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1060/today-in-philippine-history-april-7-1871-epifanio-de-los-santos-was-born-in-malabon" class="news_link">Epifanio de los Santos</a>.

<p>
In the early years of the American occupation, Fernando became the editor and later the director of El Renacimiento, a Spanish-language daily. Under his leadership, the newspaper became a powerful voice against the oppression and brutality of the constabulary. He also edited La Vanguardia and La Opinión.
