Early Beginnings: The Division of Investigation
</h4>

The DI was created in response to the growing need for a professional investigative body to combat crime and maintain law and order. Inspired by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States, the DI was designed to be a highly trained and skilled investigative force.

The DI was the brainchild of Commonwealth President <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1265/today-in-philippine-history-august-19-1878-manuel-quezon-was-born-in-baler-aurora" class="news_link">Manuel L. Quezon</a> and Secretary of Justice <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/2815/today-in-philippine-history-september-24-1894-jose-yulo-was-born-in-bago-negros-occidental" class="news_link">Jose Yulo</a>. To organize the division, the Philippine government hired Captain Thomas Duggan of the New York Police Department (NYPD) and Flaviano Guerrero, the only Filipino member of the FBI at the time. The formation of the DI generated significant public interest, with over 3,000 applicants vying for the initial 48 positions.

The Bureau of Investigation and the birth of the NBI
</h4>

After the devastation of World War II, on June 19, 1947, the DI was reorganized and renamed the Bureau of Investigation (BI) under Republic Act No. 157. This reorganization aimed to enhance the division's capabilities and expand its scope of operations. Later, on October 4, 1949, Executive Order No. 94 renamed the BI to the National Bureau of Investigation. This marked a significant milestone in the agency's history, as it established the NBI as a national investigative body with a broader mandate.
