Early History

Before it was transformed into a public park, the area now recognized as Luneta was initially a coastal settlement and a segment of a broader stretch of land known as "Bagumbayan," which means "new town." Originally, this area was a marshy tract beside Manila Bay, but it was subsequently developed into a park with a unique crescent shape, earning it the name Luneta, derived from the Spanish word for crescent.

During the Spanish colonial period, Bagumbayan served as a gathering place for locals. Its proximity to the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3008/the-history-of-intramuros-the-walled-city-manila" class="news_link">Intramuros</a>, the fortified city, made it an important location for trade and interaction. The area began to take on a more defined role as a public space in the 19th century.

Rizal Park

The most transformative moment in Luneta's history came with the execution of Dr. Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines, on December 30, 1896. Rizal was a prominent advocate for reform during the Spanish colonial period and was executed by firing squad at Bagumbayan, an act that ignited the Philippine Revolution.

In honor of Rizal, the area was officially renamed "Rizal Park" in the early 20th century. The Rizal Monument, a towering obelisk featuring a statue of Rizal, was erected in 1913 as a tribute to his legacy. The monument is now the focal point of the park and a pilgrimage site for those wishing to pay their respects to the national hero.
