Early Life and Education

Washington SyCip's grandfather journeyed from Fujian Province, China, to the Philippines as part of the significant Chinese migration into Southeast Asia in the late 1800s. His father, Albino Z. SyCip, grew up during the early American rule in the Philippines and, with the support of the Methodist Church, pursued a law degree at the University of Michigan
</p>
<p>
Helen Bau, Albino's wife, came from a wealthy Chinese Presbyterian family in Shanghai. Like Albino, Helen pursued higher education in the United States. The couple met and fell in love during their journey back to Asia on a steamship. They eventually settled in the Philippines, while maintaining strong connections to China.
