Mariano Fortunato Jhocson was born on October 14, 1877, in Santa Cruz, Manila into the Jhocson family, whose lineage traces back to a Chinese immigrant named Tomas Jocson in the late 18th century. His father, Crispulo Jhocson, was a renowned sculptor and woodcarver, known for his contributions to religious art, including the image of La Inmaculada Concepcion and the pulpit of the San Agustin Church in <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3008/the-history-of-intramuros-the-walled-city-manila" class="news_link">Intramuros</a>. Growing up in a family that valued craftsmanship and hard work, Mariano learned the importance of diligence and integrity from an early age.

Despite his family's modest means, Mariano pursued his education at the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/2987/history-of-ateneo-de-manila-university" class="news_link">Ateneo Municipal de Manila</a>, where he displayed a practical nature and entrepreneurial spirit. To support himself, he sold toys carved in his father's shop, such as yoyos, to buy school supplies. His academic record at Ateneo reflected his determination, with notable grades in subjects like arithmetic, geography, and business correspondence.
