Early Life and Education

Born on June 6, 1887, in Cebu City, Vicente Rama - affectionately called "Don Vicente" or "Nyor Inting" - was the eldest child of Gabriel Raffiñan and Engilberta Ramas.  His mother, a strong-willed widow who managed a copra-tobacco brokerage, raised Vicente and his sister Susana alone after Gabriel's death from diabetes. Named after St. Vincent Ferrer, Vicente grew up in a modest household shaped by his mother's resilience and business acumen.

Later in life, he adopted the last name "Rama",  without offering any explanation for omitting the final letter of his mother's surname.

Rama's academic journey began at the Seminario-Colegio de San Carlos (now the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/2964/the-history-of-the-university-of-san-carlos-of-cebu" class="news_link">University of San Carlos</a>) from 1904 to 1908, where he excelled as a student. His thirst for knowledge led him to Manila, where he studied law at the Escuela de Derecho from 1908 to 1910, earning a Bachelor of Laws degree. This education laid the foundation for a career that would blend intellectual pursuits with public service.
