Born around 1502 in Zumárraga, a small town in the Basque province of Gipuzkoa, Spain, Miguel López de Legazpi hailed from a noble family of modest means. In New Spain (modern-day Mexico), he married Isabel Garcés and raised nine children, establishing himself as a respected bureaucrat. He held positions such as mayor of Mexico City and worked as a scribe in the colonial administration, gaining experience that prepared him for leadership on a grander scale. At the age of 60, when most men of his era might have retired, Legazpi embarked on the expedition that would define his legacy.

The Expedition to the Philippines

In 1564, King Philip II of Spain commissioned Legazpi to lead an expedition to the East Indies, a region rumored to hold vast riches in spices and trade opportunities. The mission aimed to establish a permanent Spanish presence in Asia, counter Portuguese dominance, and spread Christianity. Departing from the port of Navidad in Mexico on November 21, 1564, Legazpi commanded a fleet of four ships - the "San Pablo", "San Pedro", "San Juan", and "San Lucas" - carrying over 300 men, including soldiers, sailors, and Augustinian friars led by <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3102/andr-s-de-urdaneta-manila-acapulco-galleon-route-architect" class="news_link">Andrés de Urdaneta</a>, a skilled navigator.
