Born on December 10, 1908, in <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3005/the-history-of-ermita-manila-a-journey-through-time" class="news_link">Ermita, Manila</a>, Loreto Paras grew up in a city that was both a cultural hub and a battleground of colonial influences. Manila in the early 20th century was a place of contrasts - Spanish traditions lingered while American governance reshaped education and culture. This backdrop shaped Paras-Sulit's worldview and, later, her writing.

She completed her secondary education in Manila before enrolling at the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1188/today-in-philippine-history-june-18-1908-the-university-of-the-philippines-was-established" class="news_link">University of the Philippines</a> (UP), where her literary talents began to shine. At UP, she joined a vibrant community of young writers who were experimenting with English as a medium of expression - a bold choice in a country still navigating its identity under American rule. In 1927, alongside peers like <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1165/today-in-philippine-history-june-7-1907-arturo-belleza-rotor-was-born" class="news_link">Arturo Rotor</a> and Jose Garcia Villa, she co-founded the UP Writers' Club, a group that would nurture some of the Philippines' most influential literary voices. Paras-Sulit graduated in 1930 with a Bachelor of Science in Education, earning magna cum laude honors - a testament to her intellectual rigor.
