Andrés de Urdaneta: Manila-Acapulco Galleon Route Architect
Andrés de Urdaneta (1498 - 1568) was a Spanish navigator, cosmographer, Augustinian friar, and one of the most pivotal figures in the history of Spanish exploration and colonization in the Pacific. Often overshadowed by the commanders he served under, Urdaneta's brilliance as a mariner and his pivotal role in Miguel López de Legazpi's 1564 - 1565 expedition to the Philippines cemented his legacy. His discovery of a reliable transpacific return route, known as the tornaviaje, laid the foundation for the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade, linking Asia and the Americas for over two centuries.
