Pre-Colonial Beginnings

Before the arrival of the Spanish, the area that would become Naga was already a thriving settlement along the banks of the Naga River. Local historian Danilo M. Gerona notes that this pre-colonial village boasted a relatively advanced culture, with sophisticated weaponry and technology for its time. The name "Naga" is believed to have originated from the abundance of narra trees (locally called "naga"), which dotted the landscape and were prized for their wood. This indigenous community laid the foundation for what would evolve into a significant urban center.

Spanish Colonization and the Founding of Nueva Cáceres
</h3>

The Spanish era marked a transformative chapter in Naga's history. In 1573, Spanish conquistador Captain <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1674/the-romance-of-juan-de-salcedo-and-lakandolas-niece-dayang-dayang-candarapa" class="news_link">Juan de Salcedo</a>, grandson of <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3097/the-life-and-legacy-of-miguel-l-pez-de-legazpi" class="news_link">Miguel López de Legazpi</a>, explored the Bicol Peninsula, reaching as far as Santiago de Libon in search of spices and gold. Two years later, in 1575, Captain Pedro de Chávez established a Spanish settlement on the site of the present-day business district, across the river from the original native village. He named it "Ciudad de Nueva Cáceres" in honor of <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1916/august-25-1575-francisco-de-sande-arrived-manila-to-assume-governorship-of-the-filipinas" class="news_link">Francisco de Sande</a>, the Spanish Governor-General and a native of Cáceres, Spain. This act formalized Naga's place in the colonial landscape, making it one of the earliest Spanish royal cities in the Philippines, alongside Manila, Cebu, and Iloilo.

Nueva Cáceres quickly grew into a center of trade, education, and ecclesiastical authority. By 1595, a papal bull elevated it to the seat of the newly established bishopric under the Archdiocese of Manila, cementing its religious significance. Over the centuries, the Spanish city and the native village merged into a single community, blending indigenous traditions with colonial influences. The city's strategic location along the Naga and Bikol Rivers made it an ideal hub for commerce and governance, a role it has maintained to this day.
