The history of Guam begins over 4,000 years ago, when seafarers from Southeast Asia - most likely the region encompassing the modern-day Philippines and Indonesia - embarked on one of humanity's earliest and most daring ocean voyages. These settlers, ancestors of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chamorro_people" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Chamorro people</a>, crossed more than 2,000 kilometers of open water to reach the Mariana Islands around 1500 BCE. Genetic and linguistic evidence strongly ties the Chamorro to the Austronesian family, a vast ethnolinguistic group that includes the indigenous peoples of the Philippines, Taiwan, and Polynesia. The Chamorro language, classified as a Western Malayo-Polynesian tongue, shares striking similarities with languages spoken in the Philippines, such as Tagalog and Cebuano, pointing to a common heritage that predates written records.

Archaeological findings, including latte stones - unique two-piece pillars that supported Chamorro homes - reveal a sophisticated society that cultivated rice and crafted pottery, practices reminiscent of early Filipino communities. While the Chamorro evolved distinct customs over millennia, their shared Austronesian ancestry with Filipinos laid the foundation for a cultural kinship that persists to this day.
