The Life of Rajah Matanda: The Elder King of Maynila

Rajah Matanda, also known as Rajah Ache or Raja Laya, was a pivotal figure in the pre-colonial history of the Philippines, reigning as one of the rulers of Maynila during the arrival of Spanish colonizers in the late 16th century. Born around 1480, his life spanned nearly a century of transformation, conflict, and cultural exchange in the region that would become Manila. Known as "Matanda", meaning "old" in Tagalog, he earned this title not just for his age but for the wisdom and experience he brought to his leadership.
