Rene Cayetano was the eldest son of Pedro Santiago Cayetano, a mechanic from Marilao, Bulacan, and Julianna Cabrera-Luna, a public school teacher from Pateros, Rizal. Growing up in a modest household, he attended public schools, graduating from Pateros Elementary School and Rizal High School. His academic journey continued at the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1188/today-in-philippine-history-june-18-1908-the-university-of-the-philippines-was-established" class="news_link">University of the Philippines</a>, where he earned degrees in political science and law as a working student, showcasing his determination to overcome financial challenges.

His pursuit of knowledge didn't stop there. With scholarship grants, Cayetano studied at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, USA, where he obtained three graduate degrees: a Master of Public Administration, a Master of Laws, and a Doctor of Laws. This advanced education not only honed his legal expertise but also broadened his perspective on governance and justice.

Legal Career and Pro Bono Work
</h3>
<p>
Cayetano's legal career was marked by brilliance and a strong sense of social responsibility. He was a founding partner of the Cayetano, Sebastian, Dado, and Cruz Law Office and later co-founded the prestigious Pecabar (Ponce Enrile Cayetano Bautista & Reyes) Law Offices with <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/2869/today-in-philippine-history-february-14-1924-juan-ponce-enrile-was-born-in-gonzaga-cagayan" class="news_link">Juan Ponce Enrile</a>. As a private practitioner, he took on high-profile, sensational cases pro bono, reflecting his commitment to justice for the underserved.

Among his notable cases were the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/2796/the-suicide-of-soft-drink-beauty-pepsi-paloma" class="news_link">Pepsi Paloma</a> rape case, the Manila Filmfest Scandal (representing Mayor <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/2564/today-in-philippine-history-august-8-2020-alfredo-lim-died-due-to-complications-brought-about-by-covid-19" class="news_link">Alfredo Lim</a>), and his role as co-defense counsel for journalist <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/2457/today-in-philippine-history-october-12-1987-cory-aquino-filed-a-libel-suit-against-columnist-luis-beltran" class="news_link">Luis Beltran</a> in a libel case filed by former President <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/897/today-in-philippine-history-january-25-1933-cory-aquino-was-born-in-manila" class="news_link">Corazon Aquino</a>, which Beltran won on appeal. His most famous case was the Vizconde massacre, where he served as a private prosecutor, securing life imprisonment for the accused in a landmark victory for justice.
