Early Life and Education

Maningning's early years were spent in Beijing, where her parents, both academics, had relocated in 1971 during the Marcos regime. Growing up during China's Cultural Revolution, she was immersed in a world of ideological fervor and artistic tradition. She attended Yumin Primary School and later Beijing Normal University's Pilot School, excelling in both language and mathematics. Her fluency in Mandarin Chinese, alongside Filipino and English learned at home, gave her a rare trilingual edge that would define her poetic voice. At age 10, she began studying traditional Chinese painting under Master Liu Fulin, mastering the xieyi style's fluid brushwork and later developing her own take on the meticulous gongbi style. This early training laid the foundation for her evocative bamboo Zen paintings, which blended Eastern philosophy with personal expression.

The Miclat family returned to the Philippines in 1986 after the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/2981/the-people-power-revolution-a-turning-point-in-philippine-history" class="news_link">People Power Revolution</a> ousted <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/595/today-in-philippine-history-september-11-1917-ferdinand-e-marcos-was-born-in-sarrat-ilocos-norte" class="news_link">Ferdinand Marcos</a>. At 15, Maningning burst onto the Philippine cultural scene with her first solo exhibition, <i>Maningning: An Exhibit of Chinese Brush Works</i>, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1987. That same year, she published her first book of poetry, <i>"Wo De Shi"</i> (My Poems), in Mandarin Chinese, a remarkable feat for someone so young. Her poems, introspective and vivid, earned her a place among 39 top-rated women poets in a Beijing anthology, signaling her growing reputation in Chinese literary circles.
