Fernando was born in <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3005/the-history-of-ermita-manila-a-journey-through-time" class="news_link">Ermita, Manila</a> on August 27, 1924 to <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/2883/enrique-z-bel-de-ayala-first-patriarch-of-the-z-bel-de-ayala-family-was-born-october-9-1877-in-madrid-spain" class="news_link">Enrique Zóbel de Ayala</a>, a wealthy industrialist, and Fermina Montojo y Torrontegui. His family's lineage tied him to the influential Ayala dynasty, known for its contributions to Philippine business and society. His father, a patron of the arts, supported the renowned Filipino painter <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1153/today-in-philippine-history-may-30-1892-fernando-amorsolo-was-born-in-paco-manila" class="news_link">Fernando Amorsolo</a>, who later tutored the young Zóbel in the basics of drawing and painting.

Zóbel's childhood was marked by mobility and adversity. His family moved between the Philippines, Spain, and Switzerland, reflecting their cosmopolitan roots. At age 18, in 1942, a severe spinal condition confined him to bed for nearly a year. During this time, he turned to sketching landscapes and caricatures, igniting a passion for art that would define his life. After recovering, he pursued higher education at Harvard University, enrolling in 1946 to study history and literature. He graduated magna cum laude in 1949 with a thesis on Federico García Lorca's theater, showcasing his intellectual curiosity and artistic leanings.
