Early Life and Education

Born on November 30, 1915 in Medina, Misamis (now Misamis Oriental), Pelaez was the fourth of eight children of Gregorio Aguilar Pelaez Sr. and Felipa Vicente Neri. Growing up in a family that valued education, he excelled academically from a young age. He graduated valedictorian from Cagayan de Misamis (now Cagayan de Oro) Elementary School and earned highest honors at <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/2987/history-of-ateneo-de-manila-university" class="news_link">Ateneo de Manila</a> High School. Pelaez pursued an Associate in Arts degree at University of the Philippines Junior College of Cebu before obtaining his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Manila in 1938, topping the bar examinations that same year.

His early career showcased his intellectual prowess and work ethic. From 1934 to 1938, he served as a Senate clerk, debate reporter, and court translator, gaining invaluable experience in the legislative and judicial systems. He later worked as an assistant court reporter at the Court of Appeals (1939–1940) and as a special prosecutor at the People's Court (1945–1946).
