Jaime C. Laya was born to Juan Cabreros Laya, a renowned Filipino novelist and educator, and Silvina del Carmen, a dedicated educator. Growing up in a household immersed in literature and education, Laya developed an early appreciation for the arts and intellectual pursuits. His father's novel, His Native Soil, won the Commonwealth Literary Award in 1940, and this cultural environment shaped Laya's lifelong passion for Philippine heritage.
