Early Life and Education

Born on December 1, 1926, in Camiling, Tarlac, to Remigio Corpuz, a school teacher, and Isabel Dizon, Onofre grew up in a modest environment that valued education. He excelled early, graduating as salutatorian from Camiling Elementary School in 1938 and Tarlac High School in 1944. His academic brilliance continued at the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1188/today-in-philippine-history-june-18-1908-the-university-of-the-philippines-was-established" class="news_link">University of the Philippines</a> (UP) Diliman, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, graduating magna cum laude in 1950. At UP, he joined the prestigious Upsilon Sigma Phi fraternity in 1947 and later served as the resident governor of the Pan Xenia fraternity, forging lifelong connections that shaped his leadership style.

Corpuz's pursuit of knowledge took him to the United States, where he earned a Master's degree in Political Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1953. He then attended Harvard University, completing a Master of Public Administration in 1955 and a Ph.D. in Political Economy and Government in 1956. His doctoral dissertation, later published as Bureaucracy in the Philippines, set a high standard for historical scholarship by meticulously analyzing the Philippine bureaucracy under Spanish colonial rule. In 1976, his contributions were further recognized internationally when Chulalongkorn University in Thailand awarded him a Ph.D. honoris causa.
