Early Life and Education

Born on August 14, 1939 in Mauban, Quezon, to Antonio Lozada Saguisag Sr., an engineering graduate, and Eusebia Nivadura, Rene was the second of seven children. Growing up in Pasig, Rizal, he displayed academic excellence early on, advancing quickly through Makati Elementary School and graduating from Rizal High School in 1955. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1959 and a Bachelor of Laws degree cum laude in 1963 from <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/2972/the-arrival-of-benedictine-monks-on-september-12-1895-the-historical-journey-of-san-beda-university" class="news_link">San Beda College</a>, where he later served as Assistant Dean. Placing 6th in the 1963 Bar Examinations, Saguisag's intellectual prowess was evident. His pursuit of knowledge led him to Harvard Law School, where he obtained a Master of Laws degree in 1968 as a full scholar.

His time in the United States during the late 1960s, amidst the Vietnam War protests and the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy, profoundly shaped his worldview. Initially conservative, Saguisag's exposure to social movements at Harvard and Berkeley transformed him into a fierce advocate for justice upon his return to the Philippines.
