The Siege of Marawi, also known as the Marawi Crisis or the Battle of Marawi, was a five-month-long armed conflict in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur, Philippines, that began on May 23, 2017. It pitted Philippine government security forces against militants affiliated with the Islamic State (ISIS), primarily the Maute and Abu Sayyaf Salafi jihadist groups. The conflict, triggered by an attempt to capture Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon, became the longest urban battle in the modern history of the Philippines, devastating the city and displacing nearly its entire population.
