At 19, he worked as a security guard at Carmelo and Bauerman Publishing in Makati, where his night shifts allowed him to immerse himself in reading, further nurturing his creative aspirations. A pivotal moment came when Caparas was hit by a stray bullet during a company strike, forcing him to take a leave of absence. During his recovery, he honed his storytelling skills, which led to the creation of his first serialized comic story, Citadel, published in Superstar magazine. This marked the beginning of his illustrious career in the Philippine entertainment industry.

Rise to Fame in Comics

Caparas emerged as a titan in the Philippine comics industry during its golden era from the 1960s to the 1980s, earning the title "Komiks King". His vivid characters and relatable narratives resonated deeply with Filipino audiences. He created iconic superheroes and comic book characters such as Panday, Bakekang, Totoy Bato, Joaquin Bordado, Kamagong, Kamandag, Elias Paniki, Tasya Fantasya, and Gagambino. These creations became cultural touchstones, blending fantasy, action, and social commentary. Caparas wrote over 800 novels and short stories for comics, many of which were later adapted into film and television, cementing his influence on Filipino pop culture.

In 1987, Caparas shifted his focus from comic illustration to scriptwriting, finding it more profitable and allowing him to prioritize his family. His transition to film and television marked a new chapter, but his contributions to comics remained a cornerstone of his legacy. In 2006, he spearheaded the Komiks Congress and Komiks Caravan, initiatives aimed at reviving the struggling comics industry by promoting new titles and showcasing original works across the Philippines.
