Origins and Early History

Pandacan's story begins in 1574 when Franciscan priests established the first Roman Catholic mission in the area, making it one of Manila's oldest districts. Originally part of the parish of <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3081/sampaloc-manila-from-tamarind-trees-to-university-hub" class="news_link">Sampaloc</a>, it became a separate parish in 1712. The name "Pandacan" is derived from "Pandanan," a term rooted in the abundant pandan trees (Pandanus amaryllifolius) that once thrived along the banks of the Pasig River. Due to linguistic nuances between Spanish colonizers and local inhabitants, "Pandanan" was recorded as "Pandacan."

During the Spanish colonial period, Pandacan was a rural farming community primarily inhabited by Tagalog migrants from Bulacan. The district produced modest amounts of rice and sugar, which were sold to the Spanish enclave in <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3008/the-history-of-intramuros-the-walled-city-manila" class="news_link">Intramuros</a>. Additionally, residents crafted bricks, tiles, cotton laces, shoes, and small boats, contributing to the local economy. In the 19th century, Pandacan earned the moniker "Little Venice" or "Little Italy" due to its numerous canals and estuaries leading to the Pasig River, where locals would leisurely row in the afternoons, as described by the renowned Filipino poet <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1053/today-in-philippine-history-april-2-1788-francisco-baltazar-was-born-in-panginay-bigaa-bulacan" class="news_link">Francisco Balagtas</a>.
