Early Life and Education

Born on June 22, 1890, in Camiling, Tarlac, to Remigio Santos and Rosa Torres, Paulino Santos grew up during a period of colonial transition in the Philippines. He received his early education in Spanish-run schools from 1897 to 1900, adapting to the Spanish colonial system. Following the American occupation, he continued his studies in American-run schools from 1901 to 1907, completing his high school education. At the age of 17, Santos served as a municipal teacher in Camiling and Gerona, Tarlac, in 1907, a role he held until 1908, demonstrating an early commitment to education and community service.

In 1908, Santos attempted to join the United States Navy in Cavite but was unable to due to a moratorium on native enlistments. He then worked briefly at a Tondo factory producing aerated water, earning seven pesos a month, before finding his true calling in the military.
