Born on October 9, 1860, in Winchester, New Hampshire, Leonard Wood graduated from <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvard_Medical_School" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Harvard Medical School</a> in 1884 and began his career as an army surgeon. His early military service included earning the Medal of Honor during the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apache_Wars" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Apache Wars</a>, showcasing his bravery and leadership. Wood gained prominence during the Spanish-American War, commanding the 1st Volunteer Cavalry (the Rough Riders) alongside <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Roosevelt" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Theodore Roosevelt</a>. His success in Cuba, where he served as Military Governor from 1899 to 1902, established his reputation as an effective administrator, particularly in improving sanitation and public services.

In 1903, Wood was appointed governor of Moro Province, a predominantly Muslim region in the southern Philippines encompassing Mindanao and the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulu_Archipelago" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Sulu Archipelago</a>. The Moros had resisted Spanish rule for centuries, and Wood's task was to establish American authority while implementing reforms. His tenure was marked by a combination of administrative initiatives and military campaigns.

Wood introduced significant reforms, including the abolition of slavery, improvements in infrastructure, and the establishment of a leper colony. These efforts aimed to modernize the region and align it with American colonial goals. However, his policies, such as the imposition of the <i>cedula</i> (a registration poll tax), were deeply unpopular among the Moros, who viewed it as a form of tribute. This, coupled with resentment toward foreign Christian rule, created a tense atmosphere.
