Early Life and Education
</h3>
<p>
Gullas's educational path reflected his determination and intellectual prowess. He attended Cebu Primary School, <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/2964/the-history-of-the-university-of-san-carlos-of-cebu" class="news_link">Colegio de San Carlos</a>, Cebu Normal School, Cebu High School, and Manila High School. At the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1188/today-in-philippine-history-june-18-1908-the-university-of-the-philippines-was-established" class="news_link">University of the Philippines</a>, he pursued a law degree, excelling as an orator and serving as the first business manager of the Philippine Law Journal, established in 1914. In 1916, he topped the bar examinations, earning the distinction of being the first Cebuano bar topnotcher, a record unsurpassed for over two decades. He was admitted to the Philippine Bar on November 13, 1916.

Legal Career
</h3>
<p>
Gullas established a prominent law firm in Cebu, partnering with notable lawyers such as Pedro Lopez and Jose Leuterio.  His firm became one of the largest in the Visayas and Mindanao, and he represented clients up to the Supreme Court of the Philippines. His legal career was marked by a commitment to justice and professional excellence, earning him widespread respect.

Journalism and Publishing
</h3>
<p>
On May 10, 1919, Gullas founded The Freeman, Cebu's longest-running newspaper and the third-oldest in the Philippines. The newspaper was launched with a mission to provide an alternative news source rooted in ethical journalism. In its maiden editorial, Gullas wrote:

The Freeman ceased publication in 1934 due to wartime disruptions but was revived in 1965 by Jose "Dodong" Gullas, initially as a weekly and later as a daily in 1969. It remains a vital part of Cebu's media landscape, celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2019.
