Benito was the ninth child of Don Eugenio López y Jalandoni, a prominent sugar baron of Negros, and Doña Marcela Villanueva y Felipe. The Lópezes, originally of Chinese-Filipino ancestry, rose from frugal beginnings to control vast sugar plantations in Iloilo and nearby islands. The marriage of Eugenio to Marcela, herself descended from affluent shipping entrepreneurs, cemented their status as a force in the developing sugar industry.

Despite their early wealth, frugality and discipline defined the López family upbringing. Family stories recall grand, unpainted wooden houses, a visual testament to the patriarch's emphasis on saving and wise investment - a tradition that profoundly shaped Benito's formative years.

Pioneer Journalist and Politician
</h3>

As Benito came of age in the aftermath of the Philippine Revolution against Spain, his country stood at a crossroads. Recognizing the power of the press, he founded the newspaper <i>El Tiempo</i>, which quickly became the voice of Iloilo. Used skillfully as a platform for national and local issues, the paper was both a business success and a springboard for Benito's political aspirations.

Benito aligned himself with the Federalista Party around 1900 or 1901, advocating for Philippine statehood within the American Commonwealth framework. In 1903, he leveraged his popularity and family influence to become Governor of Iloilo. His administration was marked by efforts to modernize infrastructure and public institutions, and in 1906, he secured re-election, a testament to his growing popularity and political skill.
