Early Life and Education

Born to Fernando Canon-Faustino y Guevara, a Philippine-Chinese watchmaker, and Blasa Alumno y Salvador, a wealthy landowner, Canon-Faustino's early life was marked by privilege and intellectual opportunity. When he was still young, his family relocated from Biñan to Calle Cabildo in <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3008/the-history-of-intramuros-the-walled-city-manila" class="news_link">Intramuros</a>, the walled city of Manila. This move positioned him for an exceptional education at the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/2987/history-of-ateneo-de-manila-university" class="news_link">Ateneo Municipal de Manila</a>, where he would form a lifelong friendship with <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1190/today-in-philippine-history-june-19-1861-dr-jose-p-rizal-was-born-in-calamba-laguna" class="news_link">Jose Rizal</a>.

<p>
Like many ilustrados of his generation, Canon-Faustino pursued higher education in Spain, studying medicine at the Universidad Central de Madrid (now the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complutense_University_of_Madrid" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Complutense University of Madrid</a>). During his time in Spain, he met María Teresa Batllé Casas, a native of Barcelona who would become his wife. This period abroad would prove formative, as it was here that he began his involvement in the propaganda movement that would eventually lead to the Philippine Revolution.

Friendship with José Rizal and Revolutionary Activities
</h2>
<p>
The relationship between Canon-Faustino and José Rizal was both personal and political, characterized by mutual respect and shared revolutionary ideals. As childhood friends and rivals, they maintained an extensive correspondence throughout their lives. Like Rizal, Canon-Faustino was a polyglot, speaking six languages: French, Spanish, Tagalog, German, English, and Italian.

One of Canon-Faustino's most significant contributions to the independence movement was his role in smuggling the first copies of Rizal's revolutionary novel <a href="https://kahimyang.com/pdf/noli-me-tangere" class="news-link-pdf">Noli Me Tangere</a> into the Philippines. Working with his wife, Canon-Faustino disguised the copies to look like bank ledgers sent by his Spanish grandfather-in-law, successfully evading Spanish authorities. This act of literary smuggling would prove instrumental in spreading revolutionary ideas throughout the archipelago.

His involvement in the propaganda movement extended to <b class="lt-bold">La Solidaridad</b>, the Filipino nationalist newspaper published in Spain. Writing under the pseudonym "<b class="lt-bold">Kutib</b>",  Canon-Faustino contributed to the publication and even helped establish its printing operations.

According to his granddaughter, Maria Teresa Canon Garcia, the death of Rizal in 1896 was the catalyst that brought Canon-Faustino back to the Philippines to join the revolution.

<h2>
Leadership in the Revolutionary Government
</h2>
<p>
Canon-Faustino's contributions to the Philippine Revolution extended far beyond literary support. He served as a cabinet member of the Revolutionary Government of the Philippines, holding the crucial positions of Secretary of Welfare and Director-General of Public Works. In this capacity, he was responsible for infrastructure development and social welfare programs during the tumultuous period of the revolution.

His appointment as Director-General of Public Works was particularly significant, as evidenced by official records of the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1608/september-15-1898-the-malolos-congress-convened-in-barasoain-church-in-malolos" class="news_link">Malolos Congress</a>, which listed him among the key cabinet members of the revolutionary government. This role placed him at the center of efforts to build the institutional framework of an independent Philippines.

During the Philippine-American War, Canon-Faustino served as a General in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nueva_Vizcaya" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Nueva Vizcaya</a>. His military service demonstrated his commitment to Philippine independence even as the struggle shifted from Spanish to American colonial rule.

Exile and Return
</h2>

Following the American victory in the Philippine-American War, Canon-Faustino went into exile in Spain. Rather than remain idle, he used this period productively, teaching electrical and mechanical engineering while operating a medical clinic. This demonstrated his versatility and commitment to serving others regardless of his circumstances.

Canon-Faustino returned to the Philippines in late 1907, where he continued his educational mission by teaching at the <b class="lt-bold">Liceo de Manila</b>. Later, he taught at the School of Engineering and Architecture in 1908, sharing his technical expertise with a new generation of Filipinos.

Musical Legacy and Cultural Preservation
</h2>
<p>
Perhaps no aspect of Canon-Faustino's multifaceted career was more personally meaningful than his dedication to music, particularly classical guitar. Encouraged by Rizal to pursue the instrument, Canon-Faustino became an accomplished guitarist whose influence extended far beyond performance.
</p>
<p>
In 1916, Canon-Faustino was appointed as the first secretary of the <b class="lt-bold">University of the Philippines Conservatory of Music</b>, a position that allowed him to shape the institution during its formative years. His appointment reflected both his musical expertise and his commitment to cultural education.

As a musician and musicologist, Canon-Faustino was deeply committed to preserving traditional Philippine music and musical instruments. He sought to document and preserve the <i>kumintang</i>, <i>kudyapi</i>, <i>kundiman</i>, and <i>balitaw</i>, recognizing their importance to Filipino cultural heritage. He also wrote articles about the <i>kudyapi</i>, contributing to scholarly understanding of indigenous Filipino instruments.

Recent scholarship, particularly the book <a href="https://lrc.hnu.edu.ph/bib/134472" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">"General Fernando Canon: His Guitar and the Revolution"</a> by Raul Manikan and Teresa Canon-Garcia, emphasizes that guitar music became <i>"the root of his cultural, artistic, and personal soul"</i>. This work presents Canon-Faustino through the singular lens of his music, arguing that his musical identity was fundamental to understanding his complex personality and contributions.

<h2>
Chess Champion and Competitive Spirit
</h2>
<p>
Canon-Faustino's intellectual prowess extended to the chessboard, where he achieved remarkable success. He became the Philippines' first National Chess Champion in 1908. His chess career included international competition, notably participating in the Barcelona Chess Championship in 1905, where he demonstrated the skill that would later earn him national recognition.

This achievement placed him among the early pioneers of organized chess competition in the Philippines, helping to establish the game's popularity in the archipelago. His success in chess reflected the same intellectual rigor and strategic thinking that characterized his contributions to engineering, music, and revolution.
