The traditional Ivatan political system was hierarchical, with the Mangpus serving as the supreme village chief, assisted by district subalterns called <b class="lt-bold">Mapolon</b>. As Mangpus of Malakdang, Dangat held considerable authority and responsibility within this indigenous governance structure.

The Mangpus possessed extensive traditional rights that defined their leadership role. These included the authority to collect revenues from the entire <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/2253/today-in-philippine-history-september-21-1974-the-barrio-was-renamed-back-to-barangay-through-pd-no-557" class="news_link">Barangay</a>, administer justice according to customary law, defend and protect their people, take up arms even for a single member of their community, and avenge crimes committed against their subjects. This traditional system had governed Ivatan society for generations, creating a deeply rooted sense of communal identity and autonomous governance that would later clash with Spanish colonial ambitions.

The Ivatan society that Dangat led was stratified but cohesive. Below the Mangpus and Mapolon were the <b class="lt-bold">kumaidian</b>, who cultivated the land and served as warriors when needed. At the bottom of the social hierarchy were slaves, though slavery in Ivatan society functioned differently from European models, often involving debt relationships or consequences for criminal behavior. Wealth determined rank and dignity, and it was customary for chiefs to demonstrate their prosperity through lavish feasts where numerous pigs and other animals were slaughtered.

The Spanish Conquest of Batanes
</h2>

The collision between Ivatan autonomy and Spanish colonialism began in 1782 when Governor-General <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3250/jose-basco-y-vargas-the-visionary-behind-economic-reform-and-batanes-annexation" class="news_link">José Basco y Vargas</a> launched an expedition to formally subjugate the Batanes Islands. This ambitious naval officer, who would later become the 53rd governor of the Spanish Philippines, was driven by economic motives and the desire to expand Spanish territorial control in the northern Philippines.

On June 26, 1783, Spanish authority was officially established in the Batanes Islands with <b class="lt-bold">Joseph Huelva y Melgarejo</b> appointed as the first Spanish governor. The new province was christened <b class="lt-bold">Provincia de la Concepción</b>, marking the formal beginning of Spanish colonial administration in this remote island chain. For his successful conquest, Basco would later be awarded the title <i>"1st Count of the Conquest of Batanes Islands"</i> by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_III_of_Spain" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">King Carlos III</a>.

Despite the formal establishment of Spanish rule, Aman Dangat initially continued to govern his people according to indigenous customs and traditional laws. This period of coexistence would prove to be temporary, as Spanish colonial policies increasingly demanded conformity to European administrative, cultural, and religious practices.

The Seeds of Resistance
</h2>

The first major confrontation between Dangat and Spanish authorities occurred in 1785, triggered by a colonial resettlement policy that would fundamentally disrupt traditional Ivatan life. Spanish administrators, seeking more efficient control over the scattered island populations, ordered the villagers of Sabtang and Vuhus to relocate to San Vicente and San Felix in the town of Ivana on Batan Island.

This forced relocation represented more than mere administrative convenience; it struck at the heart of Ivatan cultural identity and traditional governance structures. For Dangat, who derived his authority from his ancestral connection to Malakdang and his role as protector of his specific community, the relocation order posed an existential threat to his leadership and his people's way of life.

When Spanish officials demanded compliance with this policy, Dangat boldly questioned their authority, asking why he should follow Spanish policies when he was the legitimate chief of his ancestral domain. This act of defiance marked the beginning of a six-year period of escalating resistance that would culminate in open rebellion.

Initially, Dangat's resistance took the form of probing Spanish strength and resolve, testing the limits of colonial authority while maintaining his traditional leadership role. His questioning of Spanish policies was both a practical assessment of Spanish power and a principled stand for indigenous self-determination.

Escalating Tensions Under Governor Joaquín del Castillo
</h2>
<p>
The situation reached a critical point in 1789 when <b class="lt-bold">Joaquín del Castillo</b>, the third Spanish governor of Batanes, issued a comprehensive decree that demanded complete cultural assimilation from the Ivatan people. This edict required the Ivatans to abandon their traditional settlements and move to newly established Spanish-controlled towns, change their customary clothing and cultural practices, adopt the Spanish governmental system, and demonstrate absolute obedience to the governor as the representative of the Spanish king.

<p>
For Aman Dangat, this decree represented an unacceptable assault on Ivatan sovereignty and cultural integrity. As the traditional Mangpus of Malakdang, he viewed the governor's demands as a direct challenge to his legitimate authority and an attempt to destroy the social and political structures that had governed his people for generations.
</p>
<p>
The tension reached a dramatic climax when Dangat, accompanied by approximately 150 armed men, surrounded the mission house of Dominican priest <b class="lt-bold">Father Bartolomé Artíguez</b>. This bold action demonstrated both Dangat's organizational capabilities and the widespread support he commanded among his people. The chieftain demanded to know whether the Spanish governor intended to arrest him, seeking clarity about Spanish intentions while simultaneously displaying his strength and determination.

<p>
Father Artíguez, recognizing the volatile nature of the situation, assured Dangat that there were no immediate plans for his arrest. When Dangat subsequently confronted Governor del Castillo directly with the same question, the Spanish official similarly denied any intention to arrest the Ivatan leader, even encouraging Dangat to appeal directly to him if he felt unfairly treated.

These assurances, however, failed to address the fundamental conflict between Spanish colonial ambitions and Ivatan resistance to cultural and political subjugation. The underlying tensions continued to simmer, setting the stage for the violent confrontation that would soon follow.

<h2>
The Final Uprising of 1791
</h2>
<p>
The spark that ignited Aman Dangat's final rebellion came in 1791 when non-Ivatan Filipinos working under Spanish authority began systematically taking supplies and timber from Sabtang without providing just compensation. This exploitative practice represented exactly the kind of abuse that Dangat, in his traditional role as protector of his people, was bound to resist.

When Dangat formally protested this exploitation to Governor del Castillo, the Spanish response was swift and harsh. Instead of addressing the legitimate grievances raised by the Ivatan leader, Spanish authorities had Dangat's men arrested and chained. This punitive action represented a clear escalation of Spanish oppression and a direct challenge to Dangat's authority as Mangpus.
</p>
<p>
Faced with this intolerable situation, Aman Dangat made the momentous decision to organize a full-scale armed uprising against Spanish rule. Over one hundred men from Sabtang Island rallied to his call, demonstrating the depth of anti-Spanish sentiment among the Ivatan population and Dangat's continued legitimacy as their leader.
</p>

The rebellion erupted in violence when Dangat's forces killed seven Spanish government agents, marking the point of no return in the conflict between indigenous resistance and colonial authority. This action represented not merely an act of rebellion, but a declaration of war against the entire Spanish colonial system in Batanes.

<h2>
The Battle and Its Aftermath
</h2>
<p>
The Ivatan uprising, while passionate and determined, faced overwhelming odds against the superior military technology and organization of Spanish colonial forces. Armed primarily with traditional weapons such as bolo knives and bamboo spears, Dangat and his men fought valiantly against Spanish troops equipped with firearms and professional military training.

According to historical accounts, the battle lasted for three days, during which Aman Dangat and his warriors demonstrated remarkable courage and determination in their fight for indigenous freedom. However, the numerical superiority of Spanish forces ultimately proved decisive. The rebellion was crushed, with most of Dangat's men either killed in battle or captured and subsequently convicted.

<p>
<b class="lt-bold">Lieutenant Tomás Núñez</b> led the Spanish troops responsible for capturing the remaining rebels and restoring colonial authority. The Spanish response to the uprising was characteristically harsh, designed not only to eliminate the immediate threat but to serve as a deterrent to future resistance movements throughout the islands.
