His path to legal prominence began with his undergraduate education at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri, where he earned his A.M. degree in 1889. He then pursued legal studies at the prestigious Yale Law School, graduating with an LL.B. in 1892.

In 1899, he was joined by his brother, Xenophon Pierce Wilfley, who would later serve as a United States Senator from Missouri in 1918.
