Early Life and Education
</h2>
<p>
Gregorio Araneta was born to Felix Araneta and Paz Soriano, part of the prominent Araneta family that traced its origins to the Basque region of Spain. His early education began at the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/2987/history-of-ateneo-de-manila-university" class="news_link">Ateneo Municipal de Manila</a> in 1879 at the age of 10, where he demonstrated exceptional academic prowess, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1884 at the remarkably young age of 15.

His intellectual brilliance became evident during his university years at the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3223/a-historical-account-of-the-university-of-santo-tomas-a-chronicle-of-resilience-scholarship-and-national-identity" class="news_link">University of Santo Tomas</a>, where he won first prize in a philosophical contest celebrating the elevation of Rev. Fr. Ceferino Gonzales to the Cardinalate, with his dissertation on "Darwinian Transformation" in 1884. He graduated with a Licensiado en Derecho (Law degree) from Santo Tomas in 1891 at age 22, also completing studies in surveying.

Revolutionary Period and the First Philippine Republic
</h2>

Araneta's entry into public service coincided with one of the most pivotal periods in Philippine history. As a young lawyer, he worked at the prestigious law firm of Don Jose Juan de Ycaza and served as Acting Fiscal of the Audiencia de Manila from 1894-1895. His early legal career was marked by his defense of prominent Filipinos accused of financially supporting the Katipunan.

When the Philippine Revolution erupted, Araneta played crucial roles in the establishment of the First Philippine Republic. In May 1898, he was appointed to the 21-man Consultative Assembly formed by Spanish Governor-General <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3220/governor-general-basilio-august-n-spains-final-stand-in-the-philippines" class="news_link">Basilio Agustin</a>. More significantly, General <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1028/today-in-philippine-history-march-22-1869-emilio-aguinaldo-was-born-in-kawit-cavite" class="news_link">Emilio Aguinaldo</a> appointed him as a member of the National Assembly on September 14, 1898, where he participated in drafting the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/7/1899-constitution-of-the-republic-of-the-philippines-known-as-the-malolos-constitution" class="news_link">Malolos Constitution</a>.

Araneta served as Secretary General of the Malolos Congress and was appointed Secretary of Justice of the Republic on September 26, 1898. He was also a member of the famous committee under Dr. Felipe G. Calderon that drafted the Malolos Constitution, and served on the commission created to announce the establishment of the Philippine Republic to the world in November 1898.

Transition to American Rule
</h2>

When the Philippine-American War broke out, Araneta made the difficult decision to abandon the revolutionary government and work within the new American colonial system. This pragmatic choice would prove instrumental in demonstrating Filipino capacity for self-governance and laying the groundwork for eventual independence.

In May 1899, General <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3160/general-elwell-s-otis-a-military-legacy-in-the-philippines" class="news_link">Elwell Otis</a> appointed Araneta as Associate Justice of the Philippine Supreme Court, making him the youngest person to occupy this position at 30 years old. His appointment to this prestigious position marked the beginning of a distinguished career in the American colonial administration that would span over a decade.

Career Under American Colonial Rule
</h2>

Araneta's service under the American regime was marked by a series of historic firsts and significant achievements:

<b class="lt-bold">Solicitor General (1901-1906)</b>: On June 15, 1901, he was appointed Solicitor General, a position created specifically for him to assist the American Attorney General. This role demonstrated the Americans' recognition of his exceptional legal abilities.

<b class="lt-bold">Attorney General (1906-1908)</b>: When Attorney General <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3258/lebbeus-wilfley-american-legal-pioneer-in-the-philippines-and-judge-of-the-us-court-for-china" class="news_link">Lebbeus R. Wilfley</a> accepted a post in China, Araneta became his successor, taking his oath as Attorney General on July 16, 1906. He was the first Filipino to hold this sensitive position.

<b class="lt-bold">Secretary of Justice and Finance (1908-1913)</b>: On July 1, 1908, Araneta achieved another historic milestone when he was appointed to the Philippine Commission as Secretary of Justice and Finance. He was the first Filipino to hold a cabinet portfolio under the American regime, demonstrating the growing trust in Filipino administrative capabilities.

Throughout his government service, Araneta proved instrumental in establishing a competent and honest judiciary. He was responsible for selecting qualified Filipinos for judicial positions, including Judges of First Instance, Provincial Fiscals, and Clerks of Court, significantly vindicating Filipino capacity to administer justice. His work earned him recognition as the "founder of an independent, competent, and honest judiciary".

Araneta resigned from government service on October 10, 1913, when the Democratic administration of Governor-General Francis Burton Harrison took office.

Private Practice and Business Ventures
</h2>
<p>
After leaving government, Araneta established a law practice with Salvador Zaragoza, which attracted many prominent clients. The firm later expanded to include his sons Salvador (1922) and Antonio (1928), as well as other notable lawyers like Manuel Lim, Rafael Dinglasan, and Francisco Capistrano, who later became a Supreme Court Justice.

During this period, Araneta also served as Professor of Civil Law at the University of Santo Tomas from 1916 to 1930, influencing a generation of Filipino lawyers. He also engaged in business, serving as part-time President of Cristobal Oil Company from 1918-1922.

<p>
In 1916, Araneta ran for Senator in the Fourth Senatorial District under the Partido Democrata banner but lost to Rafael Palma and Pedro Guevara of the Nacionalista Party. Despite this electoral defeat, his influence on Philippine legal and political thought remained substantial.
