For better administration and taxation purposes, Spanish authorities subdivided Pampanga into pueblos (towns), which were further divided into barrios (districts) and encomiendas (royal and private estates). A report by Governor-General <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B3mez_P%C3%A9rez_Dasmari%C3%B1as" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Gómez Pérez Dasmariñas</a> on June 20, 1591, identified La Pampanga's encomiendas as including Bataan, Betis y Lubao, Macabebe, Candaba, Apalit, Calumpit, Malolos, Binto, Guiguinto, Caluya, Bulacan, and Mecabayan, with a total of 18,680 tributes.

Due to excessive abuses committed by encomenderos, King Philip II of Spain prohibited the further awarding of private estates in 1574, though this decree was not fully enforced until 1620. The colonial period established Pampanga as one of the Philippines' richest provinces, with Manila and surrounding regions depending heavily on Kapampangan agricultural, fishery, and forestry products as well as skilled workers.

Kapampangan Collaboration and Resistance

The relationship between Kapampangans and Spanish colonizers was complex, characterized by both collaboration and resistance. The Spanish favored Kapampangans because of their early submission and adoption of Christianity, making them instrumental in Spain's conquest of other Philippine territories. Kapampangan soldiers were used extensively to subjugate other regions, with Spanish records noting that "one Castilian plus three Kapampangans" were considered as "four Castilians" in military operations.

This collaboration brought significant rewards to Kapampangan elites, who received a disproportionate share of land grants. Between 1571-1626, 7,168 <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caballer%C3%ADa" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">caballerías</a> were given to native elites of Pampanga, more than all other regions combined. After the successful battle against the Dutch in 1640, only Kapampangans were allowed to study alongside Spaniards in exclusive Spanish academies and universities in Manila.

<p>
However, Spanish abuses also sparked resistance movements. In 1645, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francisco_Maniago" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Francisco Maniago</a> led a revolution against tribute payments, while in 1660, <b class="lt-bold">Andres Malong</b> attempted to incorporate Pampanga into a kingdom based in Pangasinan. The Maniago Revolt of 1660 was particularly significant, as it inspired uprisings throughout northern Luzon, though it was ultimately suppressed with the help of loyal Kapampangan chiefs like <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Macapagal" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Don Juan Macapagal</a>.

Territorial Reconfigurations

Throughout the Spanish period, Pampanga's territory was gradually reduced as new provinces were created to accommodate growing populations. In 1754, Governor-General Pedro Manuel Arandia created the province of Bataan from Pampanga territories, transferring municipalities including Abucay, Balanga, Dinalupihan, Orion, Pilar, and Samal. In 1848, Governor-General <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3233/the-count-of-manila-narciso-claveria-and-his-transformative-legacy-in-the-spanish-philippines" class="news_link">Narciso Clavería y Zaldúa</a> ceded the towns of Aliaga, Cabiao, Gapan, San Antonio, and San Isidro to Nueva Ecija. The municipality of San Miguel de Mayumo was transferred to Bulacan in the same year.

The most significant territorial change occurred in 1860 when the northern towns of Bamban, Capas, Concepción, Victoria, Tarlac, Mabalacat, Magalang, Porac, and Floridablanca were separated to form the Comandancia Militar de Tarlac. However, in 1873, four towns (Mabalacat, Magalang, Porac, and Floridablanca) were returned to Pampanga when the Province of Tarlac was officially created. By 1873, Pampanga had achieved its present borders.

While the province was declared as "the first province to join the revolution in 1896", historical evidence suggests a more nuanced reality. Initially, many Kapampangan elites remained loyal to Spain, particularly those who had benefited from colonial privileges. However, as the revolution spread, significant portions of the province eventually joined the revolutionary cause.

The establishment of the first <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/906/about-the-katipunan" class="news_link">Katipunan</a> secret cell in Guagua in August 1897 marked the beginning of organized revolutionary activity in Pampanga. By June 1898, the province had committed itself to the revolutionary cause, with many Kapampangan elites taking office under the new republican government. <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1630/december-1-1870-jose-alejandrino-was-born-in-binondo-manila" class="news_link">José Alejandrino</a> and José Infante served in the Constitutional Convention at Malolos, while <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/2734/today-in-philippine-history-august-11-1853-tiburcio-hilario-revolutionary-governor-of-pampanga-was-born-in-san-fernando-pampanga" class="news_link">Tiburcio Hilario</a> became provincial governor and Ceferino Joven served as mayor of Bacolor.

Notably, San Fernando served as the temporary capital of the Philippine Republic in 1899, highlighting Pampanga's continued strategic importance during the transition period. However, the province's support for General <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1028/today-in-philippine-history-march-22-1869-emilio-aguinaldo-was-born-in-kawit-cavite" class="news_link">Emilio Aguinaldo</a> began to waver as American troops overran the area, and by applying their "carrot and stick" approach, the Americans successfully subdued remaining Kapampangan resistance.

The strategic location of Clark Air Base made it a primary target, and its capture provided the Japanese with a crucial foothold for further operations.

Many Kapampangans joined resistance movements during the occupation. The province served as a training ground for the USAFFE 31st Infantry Division, with Filipino soldiers from Pampanga participating in the defense of Bataan and subsequently enduring the infamous <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bataan_Death_March" class="news-link" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Bataan Death March</a> from Mariveles to Capas, Tarlac. The 1991 Mount Pinatubo Eruption

One of the most significant events in modern Pampangan history occurred on June 15, 1991, when <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3208/the-1991-mount-pinatubo-eruption-a-cataclysmic-event" class="news_link">Mount Pinatubo erupted</a> in what became the second-largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century. The eruption ejected more than one cubic mile of material and created an ash cloud that rose 35 kilometers into the atmosphere, affecting the entire Central Luzon region.
