Florante at Laura: A Summary of Francisco Balagtas' Epic Masterpiece
Florante at Laura is an epic poem written in 1838 by Filipino poet Francisco Balagtas (also known as Francisco Baltazar), considered one of the greatest masterpieces of Philippine literature. Written in Tagalog during his imprisonment in Manila around 1835-1836, the work was dedicated to his former sweetheart María Asunción Rivera, whom he referred to as "Selya". The poem consists of 399 stanzas written in the awit form - a poetic format featuring four-line stanzas with twelve syllables per line and assonant rhymes.
