Early Education and Medical Training
</h2>

<p>
Bautista received his early education at the prestigious <a href="/articles/2987/history-of-ateneo-de-manila-university" class="news_link">Ateneo Municipal</a>, where he obtained his <i>Bachiller en Artes</i>. He then pursued medicine at the <a href="/articles/3223/a-historical-account-of-the-university-of-santo-tomas-a-chronicle-of-resilience-scholarship-and-national-identity" class="news_link">University of Santo Tomas</a>, earning his <i>Licenciado en Medicina</i> degree in March 1885. That same year, he demonstrated his commitment to public service when a cholera epidemic struck the Philippines, treating numerous afflicted patients and developing a medicine similar to paregoric that helped combat the disease.

His family's affluence enabled him to pursue advanced studies in Spain. At the Universidad Central de Madrid, he obtained his <i>Doctor en Medicina</i> degree in 1891 after presenting his doctoral thesis entitled <i>"Consideraciones Acerca de los Abscesos del Hígado en los Climas Cálidos"</i> (Considerations on Liver Abscesses in Warm Climates). Following his graduation, he toured leading hospitals across Europe, including those in Paris, Berlin, and Brussels, absorbing the most advanced medical knowledge of his time.

<h2>
The Propaganda Movement and Revolutionary Activities
</h2>
<p>
During his sojourn in Europe, Bautista became deeply involved with the Propaganda Movement, working alongside compatriots such as <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1190/today-in-philippine-history-june-19-1861-dr-jose-p-rizal-was-born-in-calamba-laguna" class="news_link">José Rizal</a>, <a href="/kauswagan/articles/705/today-in-philippine-history-october-25-1857-juan-luna-was-born-in-badoc-ilocos-norte" class="news_link">Juan Luna</a>, <a href="/kauswagan/articles/554/today-in-philippine-history-august-30-1850-marcelo-h-del-pilar-was-born-in-cupang-bulacan-bulacan" class="news_link">Marcelo H. del Pilar</a>, <a href="/kauswagan/articles/962/today-in-philippine-history-february-27-1858-pedro-paterno-was-born-in-sta-cruz-manila" class="news_link">Pedro Paterno</a>, and <a href="/kauswagan/articles/831/today-in-philippine-history-december-18-1856-graciano-lopez-jaena-was-born-in-jaro-iloilo" class="news_link">Graciano López Jaena</a>. When he was in Paris in 1889, he even stayed at the residence of José Rizal, his former schoolmate. The friendship between Bautista, Rizal, and Luna was profound, documented through their collected correspondence and frequent gatherings in Paris, including fencing sessions in Luna's backyard.

<p>
Bautista's involvement in the Propaganda Movement extended to Freemasonry, a crucial network for Filipino reformists. He became a member of Logia Revolución in Barcelona in 1889, adopting the Masonic name "Balagtas" after the renowned Tagalog poet. In Madrid, he joined the exclusively Filipino lodge Solidaridad No. 53, and in Paris, he formed a Masonic triangle with <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1322/today-in-philippine-history-october-29-1866-antonio-luna-was-born-in-binondo-manila" class="news_link">Antonio Luna</a> and Trinidad Pardo de Tavera.

<p>
As a testament to his close friendship with Juan Luna, the master painter gifted Bautista his iconic work <b class="lt-bold">"Intérieur d'un Café"</b> (<a href="/kauswagan/articles/713/today-in-philippine-history-october-27-2002-the-gsis-purchased-juan-lunas-parisian-life-painting-at-an-auction-in-hong-kong" class="news_link">Parisian Life</a>), painted in 1892. This painting depicts the three friends - Luna, Rizal, and Bautista - enjoying an evening at a Parisian café, and it would later become one of the most celebrated works in Philippine art history.

<h2>
Imprisonment and Service to the First Republic
</h2>
<p>
When Bautista returned to the Philippines in 1895 and began his medical practice, offering his services to indigent families, the Spanish authorities viewed his civic-spiritedness with suspicion. He was arrested on charges of giving moral and financial support to Filipino rebels and imprisoned in Fort Santiago. During his incarceration, he shared the same cell with José Rizal and other patriots.

<p>
After his release, Bautista was appointed by Spanish Governor General Basilio Augustín to the newly created Consultative Assembly, though this body ultimately failed to accomplish its mission. When General <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1028/today-in-philippine-history-march-22-1869-emilio-aguinaldo-was-born-in-kawit-cavite" class="news_link">Emilio Aguinaldo</a> appointed him as a delegate to the Malolos Congress, Bautista became one of the signatories of the historic <a href="/kauswagan/articles/7/1899-constitution-of-the-republic-of-the-philippines-known-as-the-malolos-constitution" class="news_link">Malolos Constitution</a>.

<p>
During the brief existence of the First Philippine Republic, Bautista served as a professor at the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universidad_Literaria_y_Cientifica_de_Filipinas" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Universidad Científico-Literaria de Filipinas</a> (Literary and Scientific University of the Philippines), established on October 19, 1898, which was the country's first state university.

<h2>
Pioneer of Philippine Medical Education
</h2>
<p>
After the revolution, Bautista dedicated himself to medical education and practice. <b class="lt-bold">In 1907, Dr. Bautista was appointed Professor of Clinical Medicine and Therapeutics</b> at the newly established University of the Philippines College of Medicine and Surgery. When Dr. William E. Musgrave relinquished his position as Head of the Department of Medicine, Bautista succeeded him, becoming the first Filipino to hold this prestigious position.

He did not want to make money on the lives of his countrymen, whenever there was a likelihood of an epidemic of cholera."

In 1926, Bautista traveled to the United States as a member of an educational mission, then proceeded to Paris where he studied lung diseases, becoming one of the few specialists in this field in the Philippines.

<h2>
Business Ventures and Nation Building
</h2>
<p>
Beyond his medical career, Bautista demonstrated remarkable business acumen and vision for national development. He served as one of the directors of the Agricultural Bank established on June 18, 1909. While serving in this capacity, he was asked by Governor-General <a href="/articles/3205/william-cameron-forbes-his-philippine-impact" class="news_link">William Cameron Forbes</a>, along with certain representatives from the Compañía General de Tabacos, to study the financial needs of sugar planters. Upon his recommendation, the government introduced the "crop loan system".

<p>
Bautista was instrumental in convening the country's First Agricultural Congress, which led to the founding of the <a href="/articles/3204/today-in-filipino-history-july-22-1916-the-philippine-national-bank-was-established" class="news_link">Philippine National Bank</a> in 1916. He also served as the founding president of the Germinal Cigar and Cigarette Company, from which he derived substantial income that he used to support various charitable causes.

The Great Philanthropist
</h2>
<p>
Bautista's generosity became legendary. The wealth he accumulated from his business ventures enabled him to sponsor numerous talented Filipinos to study abroad. Among his beneficiaries were:

He provided free medical services to poor patients and supplied them with medicines at no cost. He also supported hospitals, religious organizations, and served as an active member of the Colegio Médico-Farmacéutico, the Philippine Medical Association, and the Liga Nacional Filipina Para la Protección de la Infancia. As a doctor at St. Paul's Hospital, he also presided over the board of examiners for medicine.
