Early Years and Military Education

Yan's path to military distinction began at Arellano High School, where he graduated in 1936. In 1937, at just seventeen years old, he entered the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3155/the-history-of-the-philippine-military-academy" class="news_link">Philippine Military Academy</a>, becoming part of the historic PMA Class of 1941. His time at the academy was marked by exceptional academic and military performance. During his Second (Third-year cadet) and First class (Fourth-year cadet) years, he wore the coveted five-pointed star on his dress uniform collar, an emblem of academic excellence that earned him the designation of "star-man".

As a Senior Cadet, Yan held two prestigious positions: chairman of the Honor Committee and editor-in-chief of the Corps Magazine. On graduation day, he received the Presidential Saber from Vice President <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1273/today-in-philippine-history-september-9-1878-sergio-osme-a-sr-was-born-in-cebu-city" class="news_link">Sergio Osmeña</a>, a symbol of superiority in both academic work and military training. World War II and Survival

Yan joined the Armed Forces of the Philippines in 1941, just as the storm clouds of war gathered over the Pacific. When World War II engulfed the Philippines in December 1941, the young lieutenant found himself thrust into the crucible of combat. The Fall of Bataan in April 1942 marked the beginning of one of the darkest chapters in Philippine-American military history, and Yan would become both witness to and survivor of its worst atrocities.

On April 12, 1942, during the infamous Bataan Death March, Yan survived the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantingan_River_massacre" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Pantingan River Massacre</a>. This war crime, attributed to Japanese Colonel <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masanobu_Tsuji" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Masanobu Tsuji</a>, involved the mass execution of 350-400 Filipino officers and non-commissioned officers from the Philippine Commonwealth Army's 1st, 11th, 71st, and 91st Divisions. The victims were separated from enlisted men, tied with telephone wire, and systematically executed through beheading and bayoneting over the course of two hours in the scorching sun.

Lieutenant Manuel Yan was among the handful who miraculously survived, buried beneath the bodies of his slain comrades. As darkness fell, he managed to escape, carrying with him the physical and psychological scars of that horrific day. Another survivor, Captain Ricardo Papa, would later become Chief of Police in Manila, while Yan's survival would lead him to even greater service to his nation.

Rising Through the Ranks

Following the war, Yan's career in the Armed Forces steadily progressed. His competence, integrity, and dedication to duty earned him promotions and increasingly responsible positions. He served as Chief of the Philippine Constabulary from 1967 to 1968, demonstrating his capability in managing one of the most important law enforcement agencies in the country.

In May 1968, President <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/595/today-in-philippine-history-september-11-1917-ferdinand-e-marcos-was-born-in-sarrat-ilocos-norte" class="news_link">Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr.</a> appointed Yan as Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. At 48 years old, Yan became the youngest military officer ever to hold this position in AFP history. His appointment to this highest military post was a testament to his exceptional leadership qualities and professional competence. Throughout his nearly four-year tenure as AFP Chief of Staff, Yan was known for his considerate leadership style - a stark contrast to the often harsh and profanity-laden approach common in military circles.

His aide-de-camp, then Captain Emiliano "Mitch" Templo, recalled how General Yan demonstrated genuine concern for his staff's well-being. When Templo once called in sick with gastro-intestinal problems, Yan personally called to check on him and recommended complete rest. The harshest words anyone would hear from the general when upset by failures or stupidities were <b class="lt-bold">"By golly!"</b> - a far cry from the usual military expletives.

Standing Against Martial Law

Yan's tenure as AFP Chief of Staff reached a critical juncture in the early 1970s as President Marcos laid the groundwork for authoritarian rule. In 1971, Yan took a principled public stand, prominently telling media that the grounds for Marcos to either impose martial law or suspend the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus did not exist. This public statement from the nation's highest-ranking military officer was a clear signal that not all of the military establishment supported Marcos's authoritarian ambitions.

When Marcos signed Proclamation No. 1081 on September 21, 1972, officially declaring martial law, Yan made the difficult but principled decision to resign his post. He did not want to be involved with the implementation of martial law, believing it lacked legitimate justification. Yan was later described as "the last replaced official and obstacle to Ferdinand Marcos", whose resignation made it possible for the former president to consolidate his dictatorial powers.

This act of principled defiance came at a personal cost. Yan's diplomatic assignment to Thailand, which followed soon after, was largely seen as a way of easing him out from Marcos's inner circle for publicly stating that Marcos had no clear reason to impose martial law. Yet even in what could have been viewed as exile, Yan would continue to serve the Philippines with distinction.

A Distinguished Diplomatic Career

From 1972 to 1981, Ambassador Yan served as the Philippine Ambassador to Thailand. His tenure in Bangkok demonstrated his adaptability in transitioning from military to diplomatic service. In April 1973, he found himself dealing with a peculiar diplomatic incident involving an article in the <i>Bangkok Post</i> about actress <b class="lt-bold">Dovie Beams</b> and her alleged affair with President Marcos. Despite the awkwardness of the situation, Yan handled the matter professionally, lodging a diplomatic protest and working with Foreign Affairs Secretary <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3265/the-diplomatic-brilliance-of-carlos-p-romulo" class="news_link">Carlos P. Romulo</a> to resolve the issue.

From 1981 to 1986, Yan served as Ambassador to Indonesia, playing a crucial role in strengthening the Philippines' diplomatic relations with this important Southeast Asian neighbor. His final diplomatic posting was as Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1987 to 1992. Throughout these years, he earned respect and affection from the communities he served, with many noting his genuine warmth and dedication.
