General William Draper: British Conquest of Manila in 1762

Lieutenant General Sir William Draper KB (1721-1787) was a distinguished British military officer whose greatest triumph came during the Seven Years' War when he led the expedition that captured Manila from Spanish control in 1762. Born in Bristol, England, Draper received a classical education at Eton and King's College, Cambridge, where he was admitted as a scholar in 1740. Though initially intended for holy orders, he chose instead to pursue a military career, obtaining an ensigncy in a regiment of foot in 1744.
