Alexander Dalrymple: The 12-Day British Governor of Manila and the Ghosts of Empire
Alexander Dalrymple was born on , at New Hailes, Scotland, a member of an upper-class family and one of sixteen children. This background provided him with connections but not a direct inheritance, making a career overseas an attractive prospect. In 1752, at the age of fifteen, he secured an appointment as a "writer", or junior clerk, in the British East India Company (EIC). He departed England in December 1752 and arrived at Madras in May 1753.
