Philippine Roots: The Arrastia-Salvador Heritage

Neile Adams was born María Ruby Neilam Arrastia y Salvador, the daughter of a union between two prominent Philippine families. José first married Teodorica "Kika" Reinares of Orion, Bataan, with whom he had two daughters: Mercedes and Beatriz. His daughter Beatriz would later marry Carlos Preysler, and their daughter <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isabel_Preysler" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Isabel Preysler</a> would become an international socialite and the mother of singers <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enrique_Iglesias" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Enrique Iglesias</a> and Julio Iglesias Jr.. This makes Neile Adams the maternal aunt of Isabel Preysler and the great-grandaunt of Enrique Iglesias.

Neile's mother, Carmen "Miami" Salvador, came from an entirely different but equally colorful background. Of Spanish and German descent, Carmen was a professional hula dancer and stage performer in Manila's vibrant entertainment scene. Her brother was <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/2944/lou-salvador-sr-a-legend-in-sports-and-entertainment-was-born-on-july-7-1905-in-tacloban" class="news_link">Lou Salvador Sr.</a>, the legendary Filipino basketball player who scored 116 points in a single game during the 1923 Far Eastern Games and later became a prominent stage actor and talent manager in Philippine show business. Lou Salvador's numerous children would populate Philippine entertainment for decades, including actors Leroy Salvador, Ross Rival (father of actress Maja Salvador), and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phillip_Salvador" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Phillip Salvador</a>.

Early Life in Manila

Though José Arrastia never acknowledged Neile - she reportedly never met her father - Carmen raised her daughter with love and surrounded by the performing arts. Growing up in Manila during the 1930s and early 1940s, young Ruby was immersed in entertainment from an early age. Her mother, a star in the Far East, would bring her onstage to dance with her older cousin when she was only seven or eight years old.

She danced and she sang - totally untrained - but they loved her"</i>, Neile recalled in a 2014 interview. <i>"As I was growing up she would bring me up on stage... and I would dance with my older cousin. Ruby attended Catholic schools run by nuns, where she was always selected as one of the dancers for school entertainment. These early performances planted the seeds for what would become a remarkable career. Her grandfather from her mother's side had been in the Spanish-American War and later returned to Manila, where he made his living.

War and Resistance: A Teenager in Occupied Manila

The Japanese invasion of the Philippines in December 1941 dramatically altered Ruby's childhood. What had been a life of relative privilege transformed into one of deprivation and danger. During the Japanese occupation of Manila, the teenage Ruby and her mother were among the thousands of civilians interned by the Japanese forces.

Accounts vary regarding their exact experience - some sources state they were held in Santo Tomas Internment Camp, the largest civilian internment facility in the Philippines, where over 3,000 Allied civilians were held on the campus of the University of Santo Tomas. In one of the most extraordinary chapters of her young life, Ruby became a spy for the Philippine resistance during her early teens. This dangerous work came at a cost - she was wounded by shrapnel during the Allied liberation of Manila. Some accounts suggest she lived on the streets with her mother for approximately three months after the liberation, before arrangements could be made to leave the war-torn city.

That Ruby and her mother survived this catastrophe and managed to secure passage to the United States speaks to their resilience and determination.

Journey to America: A New Beginning

In 1948, at age 16, Ruby Salvador left the Philippines with her mother and emigrated to the United States. The transition from war-torn Manila to America must have been jarring. Because they left without proper documentation - birth certificates and records had been lost in the chaos of war - her birth year was officially recorded as 1932, though there may have been some uncertainty about the exact date.

Ruby was enrolled at Rosemary Hall, a prestigious private girls' school in Greenwich, Connecticut (now Choate Rosemary Hall). She graduated in 1949, barely a year after arriving in America. Her English proficiency and quick adaptation suggest both natural intelligence and the determination that would characterize her entire career.

Following high school, Ruby briefly attended Marjorie Webster Junior College in Washington, D.C.. But her passion lay in dance, and she soon moved to New York City, the epicenter of American performing arts. There she earned a scholarship to the <b class="lt-bold">Katherine Dunham School of Dance</b>, studying under the legendary African American dancer and choreographer who had revolutionized modern dance with her incorporation of Caribbean and African movements.
