Early Life and Family Background

<span class="new-span-900">Victoria Syquia Quirino</span> was born on <time datetime="1931-05-18">May 18, 1931</time>, to Congressman <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/753/today-in-philippine-history-november-16-1890-elpidio-quirino-the-sixth-president-of-the-philippines-was-born-in-the-town-of-vigan-ilocos-sur" class="news_link">Elpidio Quirino</a> and his wife Alicia Jimenez Syquia. The Quirino family belonged to the Filipino political and intellectual elite. Her father, born in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, in 1890, had risen from humble beginnings as a barrio teacher to become a lawyer and prominent congressman. Her mother, Alicia, came from the prominent Syquia-Jimenez families of Vigan, a mestiza family with deep roots in the Ilocos region.

Vicky was the second daughter in a family of five children. Her older brother, Tommy (Tomas), born in 1923, would become a businessman. She had younger siblings: Armando, Norma, and Fe Angela. The Quirino family lived in relative comfort and privilege in <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3005/the-history-of-ermita-manila-a-journey-through-time" class="news_link">Manila's Ermita district</a>, though her father was still building his political career during her early childhood.

The Tragedy of World War II

The defining event of Vicky's youth came with the outbreak of the Pacific War in December 1941. When Japanese forces occupied the Philippines, the Quirino family faced the horrors of war firsthand. As American forces began their liberation campaign in early 1945, Manila became a fierce battleground.

During the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Manila_(1945)" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Battle of Manila</a> (February-March 1945), as the family attempted to flee their home on Colorado Street in Ermita - which lay in the no-man's-land between American and Japanese positions - tragedy struck. Caught between American artillery shells and Japanese machine gun fire, the family was brutally attacked by Japanese troops.

Vicky's mother, Alicia Syquia Quirino, was shot and killed. Three of her younger siblings - Armando, Norma, and Fe Angela - were also murdered by Japanese soldiers. Vicky herself witnessed the bayoneting of her infant sister Fe Angela, a trauma that would remain with her throughout her life. Her brother Tommy survived, along with her father, though he was severely wounded.

The grief that followed was immeasurable. President Quirino (as he would later become) reportedly carried the bodies of his wife and children one by one to Paco Cemetery in Manila, digging individual graves with his own hands and burying them himself. Rise to National Prominence

Despite the devastating personal tragedy of 1945, Elpidio Quirino's political career ascended. He was elected Vice President of the Philippines under President <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1370/today-in-philippine-history-january-1-1892-manuel-roxas-was-born-in-capiz" class="news_link">Manuel Roxas</a> in 1946, and when Roxas died unexpectedly of a heart attack on <time datetime="1948-04-15">April 15, 1948</time>, Quirino assumed the presidency.

At just 16 years old, Vicky found herself thrust into an extraordinary position: <b class="lt-bold">as the daughter of a widower president who never remarried, she became the official First Lady of the Philippines.</b> This made her the youngest First Lady in Philippine history.

First Lady Years (1948-1953)

As First Lady at such a young age, Vicky was responsible for the social and ceremonial functions of Malacañang Palace. She served as the official hostess at state dinners, receptions, and diplomatic functions. Despite her youth and the unusual circumstances of her appointment, accounts suggest she performed these duties with poise and dedication.

During her tenure, Vicky made several historical firsts. She was the second presidential daughter to have her debutante ball (the first being a presidential daughter during the Roxas administration), but she achieved a singular distinction: she was the first presidential daughter to be married in Malacañang Palace itself. On this momentous occasion, she married <b class="lt-bold">Luis Tuason "Chito" González</b>, a prominent Manila businessman, in a grand ceremony held in the Ceremonial Room of the Palace (now known as Rizal Hall). This wedding became a notable social event of the era.

The Quirino presidency (1948-1953) was a tumultuous period in Philippine governance. The administration grappled with the aftermath of war, the Huk rebellion in Central Luzon, economic reconstruction, and nation-building efforts.
