Early Years
</h2>
<p>
Álvarez was born on <time datetime="1818-03-15">March 15, 1818</time>, in Tierra Alta, Cavite, to parents Severino Álvarez and María Malia. He received his education at <b>San José College</b> in Manila, where he earned his teacher's diploma. After completing his studies, he returned to Cavite and worked as a teacher in the towns of Naic and Maragondon.

<p>
In 1863, he married <b>Nicolasa Virata y del Rosario</b>. They had three children together, including <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1245/today-in-philippine-history-july-25-1872-santiago-alvarez-was-born-in-imus-cavite" class="news_link">Santiago</a>, who would also become a well-known revolutionary general.

<h2>
Standing Up Against Spanish Rule
</h2>
<p>
Álvarez showed his resistance to Spanish colonial authority early in his life. In 1871, he was arrested and tortured by Spanish authorities after he gave dirty water to a Spanish soldier who had fallen from his horse. The soldier reported him, and Álvarez suffered punishment for this act of defiance.

<p>
The following year, in 1872, Álvarez was arrested again during the <a href="/articles/3310/the-1872-cavite-mutiny-and-gomburza-martyrdom" class="news_link">Cavite Mutiny</a>. Spanish officials suspected him of involvement in the uprising because they found an autographed photograph of Father <a href="/kauswagan/articles/923/today-in-philippine-history-february-9-1837-father-jose-burgos-was-born-in-vigan-ilocos-sur" class="news_link">José Burgos</a>, a Filipino priest who advocated for Filipino clergy rights, in his possession. He was held in solitary confinement and later brought to Manila in chains. Only through the intervention of provincial officials was he eventually released.

<h2>
Government Service Before the Revolution
</h2>
<p>
After his release, Álvarez returned to Noveleta and worked his way up in local government. In 1881, he was elected gobernadorcillo (village chief). Later, in 1893, he became capitan municipal, a new title introduced under Spanish colonial reforms. He held this position until the Philippine Revolution began in 1896.

<h2>
Revolutionary Leader
</h2>
<p>
When the Philippine Revolution started in August 1896, Álvarez became a central figure in the movement. He and his son Santiago were both active members of the <a href="/kauswagan/articles/906/about-the-katipunan" class="news_link">Katipunan</a>, the secret anti-Spanish organization founded by <a href="/kauswagan/articles/786/today-in-philippine-history-november-30-1863-andres-bonifacio-was-born-in-tondo-manila" class="news_link">Andrés Bonifacio</a> in 1892. Notably, Álvarez was the uncle of <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1494/today-in-philippine-history-may-9-1875-gregoria-de-jesus-was-born-in-caloocan" class="news_link">Gregoria de Jesús</a>, Bonifacio's wife, which gave him a family connection to the revolution's founding.

<p>
In the early months of 1896, Álvarez organized and became the president of  <b>Magdiwang</b>, one of the two Katipunan branches operating in Cavite. The other branch was called <b>Magdalo</b>. Under his leadership, he helped increase Katipunan membership in the region and organized the early resistance against Spanish forces.
</p>

When the revolution began, Álvarez took on the rank of General and led Filipino forces in several battles across Cavite. His military efforts were successful - within weeks of the revolution's start, his forces had liberated most towns in Cavite from Spanish control. He became known as the person who started the revolution in Cavite.

<h2>
The Tejeros Convention
</h2>
<p>
In 1896, Álvarez attended the <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1258/the-tejeros-convention-according-to-general-artemio-ricarte" class="news_link">Tejeros Convention</a>, a meeting where revolutionary leaders gathered to establish a new government. This convention became historically significant because it resulted in power struggles among the revolutionary leaders. Although Álvarez was nominated as a candidate for vice-presidency at the convention, he did not win the position.

<p>
The disputes between different factions of the revolution, combined with his grief over the <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1123/today-in-philippine-history-may-10-1897-andres-bonifacio-was-executed-for-being-guilty-of-treason-and-sedition" class="news_link">execution of Bonifacio in 1897</a>, caused Álvarez to step back from active military involvement. Unlike many other revolutionary leaders, he did not join Emilio Aguinaldo's forces when they retreated to Biak-na-Bato.
