These were called <b>Awit</b> (which had 12 syllables per line) or <b>Corrido</b> (which had eight syllables per line).

Because the Spanish government and friars controlled what could be published, many indigenous stories were suppressed. However, stories about Spanish knights were allowed because they were seen as harmless entertainment or as ways to promote Christian values. The Tagalog writers took the story of the Spanish Bernardo and adapted it, adding local details and meanings that the Spanish authorities did not fully understand.

The most famous of these texts is the <b>Historia Famosa ni Bernardo Carpio</b>. This poem tells a complex story of forbidden love and betrayal. It begins with Don Sancho Díaz and Jimena, the sister of King Alfonso of Spain. They were deeply in love, but the King forbade their relationship. When a baby boy was born to them, the King was furious. He ordered Don Sancho to be imprisoned and his eyes plucked out, while Jimena was sent to a convent.

The baby, Bernardo, was given to a General named Don Rubio to be raised. Bernardo grew up thinking Rubio was his father, but he soon showed signs of supernatural strength. As a child, anything he touched would break in his hands. He eventually became the King's greatest knight, fighting against the Moors and other enemies of the crown. However, the story takes a dark turn when Bernardo learns the truth about his real parents and how the King had treated them.

This narrative was very popular among Filipinos because it focused on the importance of family and the idea of a hero who was strong but humble. The story also introduced the concept of loob, or the "inner being". Bernardo's strength was not just physical; it was a reflection of his pure and noble heart. The suffering of his parents created a deep sense of utang na loob (a debt of gratitude) that Bernardo felt he had to repay by seeking justice.

The shaman called for a parley and led Bernardo to a cave in the mountains of Montalban. Using a powerful magical talisman called an <b>Agimat</b>, the shaman caused two massive boulders to grind against each other. Bernardo jumped between the boulders to hold them apart, but the power of the agimat was as great as his own strength. He became stuck there, unable to let go of the rocks without being crushed, and unable to push them away because of the magic.

The Duel with the Magical Being

Another version of the story claims that Bernardo encountered a jealous magical being while living in the mountains of <b>San Mateo</b>. This being was angry that Bernardo was more famous and stronger than he was. After failing to defeat Bernardo in direct combat, the magical being pretended to be a friend and invited Bernardo to a hidden grove. In the center of the grove were two large stone slabs. When Bernardo walked between them, the slabs fell inward. Bernardo caught them with his hands and has been holding them ever since.

The Punishment of the Gods

Some traditional versions suggest that Bernardo was punished by the old gods for his arrogance or insolence. In these tales, he was chained to the mountains of the Montalban Gorge and forced to stand there forever. His struggle to break these chains or to prevent the mountains from crashing together is what causes the tremors felt throughout the region.
